Located in one of the tiny riverside white villages half an hour from Ronda. Nestling in a lovely open valley framed by the beautiful unspoiled green mountain ranges of Ronda on the one side and the imposing white mountain ranges and nature parks of Grazalema on the other. Ancient oak and cork forests, ancient olive groves. Almond and scented orange blossoms, natural flora and fauna, wildlife heaven. Kingfishers swooping and majestic herons standing upright and still, fishing from the banks of the river.
This is the riverside village to Cortes de la Frontera, which is ten minutes away and one of the earliest of the Ronda region white villages. Cortes has a rich Moorish heritage and its full name refers to its earlier position on the border between Catholic Spain and Islamic Spain. The area has a long cultural history with several earlier civilisations seeking out the area´s abundant water and rich soil. There are ancient Roman roads and aqueducts. The irrigation canal water systems of Moorish origin are still in use to water the orchards and vegetable growing fincas in the valley.
Villa Serrania de RondaThis is one of the healthiest natural environments in which to live. It is authentic Spain and yet within easy reach of the airports of Malaga, Seville, Jerez and Gibraltar. Good roads and a scenic railway from Algeciras to Ronda which stops in the village. A superb area for horse-riding, walking, birdwatching, caving, mountaineering or just exploring the many off-road adventure tracks through the mountains used by the smugglers of former times.
The Villa Serrania de Ronda is an old traditional Cortijo which has been lovingly and carefully restored and extended by its present owners who as a family have many years of experience in restoring fine properties in various parts of the world. It has a finished build quality of the highest standard with many Andalucian and Moorish features. The original Cortijo is about 100 years old and has a beautiful spacious high walled Andalucian patio courtyard inside of which is an Andalucian fountain whose old design is specifically to take the beautiful Spanish pots and colourful plants famous in the region. Planters have been constructed all around the inside walls. These are just waiting for a new owner to choose the trees and cascading flowering shrubs to make it the secret courtyard it was designed to be. Hallway
The Villa is entered through a large wooden cortijo door opening into a reception hall the full length of the house with heavy oak beamed ceilings and exquisitely pale stone pillars. There is an interesting small fountain just before the magnificent spiral staircase with its natural granite steps leading to an atrium and sun terrace at the very top overlooking the village and mountains. Each granite step has its own separate lighting, giving a lovely welcoming effect in the evenings. The woodwork is all teak and the handrails all handmade.
Also on the ground floor is a dining room and a thoughtfully designed and fully equipped kitchen, with a separate small work room and also a laundry/store room. From the reception hall there is another smaller hallway leading to a very pretty rustic marble bathroom, a bedroom with a large built-in wardrobe unit and a separate small sitting room.
The first floor comprises four en-suite double bedrooms, all with large built-in wardrobe units, balconies and telephone and satellite T.V points in each room. The bathrooms are all good quality and tiled in rustic marble. The second floor contains two very spacious rooms leading on to a very large terrace of Moorish design. Each room has a large built-in wardrobe, telephone and satellite TV points and a good quality en-suite marble tiled bathroom similar to the floor below. The third floor at the top of the villa is a walled terrace area with views of the village and surrounding area. The built size of the main property is 454 m2. Courtyard
Across the walled courtyard from the main property and with an additional separate entrance on to the street is a completely newly constructed smaller building (some 104 m2) which consists of a large reception open plan area with a stainless steel fully equipped kitchen. An interesting feature which has been retained is a 200 year old working well which was once the village supply of water. The old well has been restored and is now housed in a stone surround enclosed in a heavy teak wooden top with a glass feature. The spring water from the well is very good and supplies one of the outside taps in the courtyard. There are also two small washrooms and a store room outside in the courtyard under the stone steps. The first floor comprises one huge open plan area with a wooden lined loft roof and a bathroom. There are three balconies and a small terrace to this building. All windows have good quality wooden shutters.
The villa has many special features. All balconies and terraces are enclosed with wrought iron work and additionally have the unusual feature of being covered by teak wooden handrails. All windows have good quality teak wooden shutters. The floors are all of rustic terracotta tiles and are surrounded by large teak wooden skirting around the walls. There is air conditioning (hot and cold) in all rooms and some have additional colonial fans which really are not needed as the perimeter walls of the villa are so thick that it is cool in summer and warm in winter. There are T.V. points and telephone points in every room and an unusually large number of electric power supply sockets.BalconyEach of the bedrooms has its own electrical circuit. All light fittings are in place and fitted with low energy bulbs. There are outside light fittings in the courtyard and up-lighters in the planters to add atmosphere to the patio trees. This entire property has had all completely new services installed, including a new drainage system, new water supply, electricity, TV system, telephone, gas, hot water boilers, emergency water storage and water purification system. There is space for a pool.
This is a charming property and everything has been done to ensure that it is comfortable and easy to manage. There is also good help available in the village if required. Also easy access in the village to fresh vegetables and fruit in season, bakery for fresh bread every morning, village butcher, local serrania ham maker and fresh fish and seafood brought up from the coast.
